Choose A Hair Style For Your Wedding
Choosing a hair style for your wedding day can be daunting. This very important decision can be difficult as your hair must not only suit your wedding dress but be both comfortable and reliable enough for you to wear for the whole of your big day. Your style must also suit your face shape and reflect who you are as a person.
Pretty Things helps you to choose exactly which hair style is right for you, plus offers some advice on tiaras and other hair decorations. There is also a list of tips to make sure that your wedding day goes smoothly - at least where your hair style is concerned.
Start Thinking
You need to start thinking early. Your hair might be too short to for the style or jewellery that you are hoping for. A hair trial with your stylist at least 6 months before your wedding day will check the length and what style is possible with your hair. You may also need to adjust your everyday style to get ready for the big day. Another trial 6 weeks before your wedding day will confirm that you will able to achieve your style and give you an idea of how much time you will need to get it ready on the day. You should have any tiara or hair decoration ready for your stylist to work with.
Do you want your hair:
Up or Down, Long or Short, Curly or Straight? If you want to wear a tiara or hair decoration, make sure you decide on this at the same time as picking your wedding hair style, not after. It may be that you need to have some styled height for a tiara or strength for a veil.
Do Your Research
Do a bit of research and browse the magazines. Collect pictures of the kind of hair style that you are hoping for. Don't forget your dress as well. Take any pictures of both hair styles and wedding dresses to your hair stylist and seek their advice on what is possible and suits you.
Also, think about whether whoever does your hair is going to be able to do what you want. It is your big day and it might be better to get a professional bridal hair stylist, rather than asking your sister or friend, to do it.
Hair Styles That Suit You
Round Face
Long hair styled up and high on the head or long and sleek styles.
Long Face
Hair style with width and volume.
Hair Length
Longer hair has more options for styling but it is important that you look like YOU. If you are not really keen on having your hair long, don't grow it just to get married or you won't feel like you. Don't forget, anything less than an inch is too short to put any decorations in it as there is not enough hair to hold them in. Small tiaras and decorated Alice Bands are great for shorter hair.
Styles
You may be thinking of having your hair up. Are you comfortable with all your hair pulled away from your face? Perhaps you should leave some hair at the front and sides to hang down. If you have an off the shoulder dress, are you happy showing a bit of flesh with your hair up?
If you would like to wear you hair down and loose, does it usually stay looking good all day?
If you are hoping to wear a veil you need to have enough hair to grip the comb safely. The larger the veil, the more strength you will need in the hair style.
Whether you choose a soft curly Romantic style or a more modern angular style with spikes or twists, make sure you get exactly the hair style you want. Be as bold as you like but don't forget you will still be looking at your wedding photos in 10 years time. Make sure they won't make you cringe.
Tiaras and Hair Decorations
Tiaras - Tiaras can be made in different heights to suit your face shape. A tall tiara such as the Pretty Things Megan Tiara or Polly Tiara suit a round face shape and look great standing out from a background of a tall hair style. Shorter hair styles are complimented by a tiara like Pretty Things Jayne Tiara or even a close knit band such as Pretty Things Alice Tiara.

Hair Combs - Combs are a great way to give your hair some colour and sparkle. The combs are also functional as they can hold the weight of your hair and are really pretty tucked into a French Pleat. They are also popular for Bridesmaid's hair.

Pins - Hair pins and hair grip decorations are great if you don't want a tiara or hair comb. Tiny sparkly flowers such as the Pretty Things Flower Pins are pretty and are used along with conventional hair grips that provide the "hold" for your style. If you choose a long free flowing hair style, hair pins many not work as they tend to slip down the hair. For this hair style, a tiara or hair decoration mounted on a head band is a better choice.
Wedding Hair Check List
- Have a hair trial with your hair stylist at least 6 months before your wedding day. Show them photos of you chosen dress and hair decorations, if possible
- Find out if you will need to grow your hair, improve it's condition or make a change to your everyday style to prepare your hair for the big day
- Never wash or condition your hair on your wedding day - it will be too soft to style properly.
- Make sure you, your Bridesmaid's and other wedding party members visit your stylist wearing zip or button up tops on your wedding day. Don't wear anything that has to come off over your head.
- Entrust a small can of hair spray with a friend at your wedding - just in case.
- Enjoy your big day!!
