About Pam Sayer & Pretty Things

Hi. My name is Pam and I am the founder of Pretty Things. I live in the Chew Valley, North Somerset, UK with my husband, Rob.

Pam and Rob Sayer

I started Pretty Things in 2005 after deciding that I wanted a change from my previous business designing and making Bridal Gowns where I also made Hair Decorations for my brides too. I also specialised in Bead Embroidery and Finishing and was known for my intricate beadwork.

I was also enjoying designing and making different items of beaded jewellery and had accumulated a large stock of hand knitted scarves that I had knitted for relaxation. It then became clear that I could not just go on making things until they completely filled our house.

In November 2005 I took a stall with a small selection of my products and that led to four more stalls that year. Ever since then Pretty Things has grown quite quickly and I attend many Events every year plus make time to attend our jewellery parties. Rob built my original Pretty Things Web site in January 2006 and it has been through several generations since then.

My background and training

Ever since I was tiny I have always loved shiny things and would play with my Grandma's button box for hours. I continued to be fascinated with all the hand crafts relating to fashion, including historical costume and at GCSE I completed projects on beading and did an in depth study of beading in 20th Century fashion at 'A' level.

At aged 15 I worked outside school as apprentice to Wedding Gown Designer, Sylvia Supple where I specialised in fine detail. At age 17 I took my first commision for hand embroidery on a wedding dress. After finishing 'A' levels I went to the internationally renowned Bristol Old Vic Theatre School on the Wardrobe Course where I met Rob - future husband. After leaving the theatre I returned to working on wedding dresses.

I started my own business designing and making Wedding gowns and continued to specialise in beadwork and hand embroidery . I got married in 2000 when I designed and beaded my own dress, made bridesmaids and mothers outfit and my husbands waistcoat. My dress was covered in thousands of tiny blood red beads and it took weeks but looked great. By 2001 I had taken on the business of Sylvia Supple when she retired and continued to make wedding dresses, hair decorations and tiaras.
